Lightroom: Which is Better? Lightroom offers features such as Tethered Capture for taking photos right within Lightroom and lets Photoshop handle any major pixel-level editing, while Photo Studio skips the capture part and includes Photoshop-style image editing as the final stage of its workflow. Adobe seems to have paid a bit more attention to the nuances of user interface and experience, while ACDSee has been focusing on creating the most complete standalone program possible.

My loyalty is to the quality of the resulting work, not to any particular brand of software! We were originally going to review ACDSee Ultimate 10 but when I tried to download the trial version which is free for 30 days I encountered a small issue.

Please note that the screenshots I used for this review are taken from the Windows version, and the Mac version will look slightly different. It may just be a layout issue on Windows 10, but it seems like a serious image editing program should make the effort to use a program that keeps its buttons fully visible in the window, at the very least. However, the download was relatively fast and the rest of the installation went smoothly.

The program is broken down into several modules or tabs, which are accessible along the top right. Manage, Photos and View are all organizational and selection modules.

Develop lets you perform all your non-destructive RAW image rendering, and with the Edit module, you can dig deeply into the pixel level with layer-based editing. Fortunately, ACDSee has included a thorough on-screen quick start guide to help new users get accustomed to the software.

Photo Studio provides an excellent range of organizational options, although the way that they are arranged is a bit counterintuitive. Of the five modules in the program, three are organizational tools: Manage, Photos, and View. The Manage module covers your general library interaction, where you do all your tagging, flagging and keyword entry.

You can also do a range of batch editing tasks, upload your images to a series of online services, including Flickr, Smugmug and Zenfolio, and create slideshows. You can filter images, but it feels like this should really be incorporated into the Manage module.

I really want to bring the shadows down to something a little darker with the intention of making the image more dramatic. I increase the Darkening only slightly and then the Amplitude to my tastes. This does a good job of refining the contrast, but without increasing the highlights on the hair and cheekbones, which would sap the somber tone. One area that is still bothering me, however, is the dreamy feel. ACDSee has a tool that can fix that simply.

So now, we move over to the Edit tool. The Dehaze tool is perfect to bring forward the grittiness I want. After clicking to the Edit tool in the top right, select Dehaze. Adjust the slider to fit your tastes, but as with every adjustment I make, less is more.

With that resolved, there is still a distracting element for me: the hair. Being as it is a light silver, it’s reflecting light more than any other part of the image, and it draws my eye. Luckily, the fourth slider of the darkening panel has almost a complete monopoly on the hair’s highlights, and lowering that fixes the problem. This is particularly great in colored images, but works well with black and white if you mask out any unwanted changes.

If you’re too heavy-handed on these sliders, you will create artifacts and damage the quality of the final image. Now, we get to the real art of separating a quick conversion to black and white from a careful creation. Select the brush icon at the top of the left hand panel, and adjust the size and pressure. The view mode is a more thorough section, where you can go through images one by one with the files at a far larger size.

This is a typical function for processing software, but it edges the competition by again employing impressive speed with little-to-no buffering in the tests I run. Develop mode is the backbone to all raw, non-destructive editing software. This is where you get to fiddle with all those sliders, agonizing over whether a little more clarity and a little less vibrancy will make all the difference.

In ACDSee Ultimate , you can make all the sweeping changes to your images you could want, as well as the localized alterations using masks. There are also tools for sharpening, noise reduction, and a specialized skin tuning section. It isn’t going to be particularly useful for beauty retouching, but for weddings and large batches of images with people or even multiple people, this can be a useful timesaver.

You have an array of adjustment layers complete with masks, as well as action sets for completing the more common tasks. One noteworthy feature is Pixel Selector, which is similar to a blend of a few different Photoshop functions you may already be aware of and use. However, it is significantly easier, more intuitive, and quicker to use, allowing you to alter colors and areas of your image.

The interface of any software in this area has a lot to do. There are enormous quantities of information and organization going on, and so, keeping the program clean and intuitive is no small task. ACDSee does it well by keeping it as simple and as clinical as it can be. In fact, if I were to be pushed for a criticism of it, that would be it: it looks a touch dated. However, what it might lack in shine, it more than makes up for in customizability. Anything that speeds up a photographer’s workflow is going to be valuable.

I have always considered Lightroom to be sluggish even on my PC, which is above and beyond what is needed. One side note on performance — and I must stress this is a layman’s observation for the most part — is the resources ACDSee draws upon compared to Lightroom. Now, I always have Chrome tabs open, as well as a plethora of other programs running and I noticed no slow-down or stress, but for older and lower-end machines, this shift in resource requirements could potentially pose an issue.

However, in the same light, it could be the genius behind the smoother and quicker workflow with significantly less memory required to run. So, what was my experience of the performance? Really good. The speed at which everything works, from preview generation through to batch processing, is quicker than I’m used to. The importing felt the same sort of speed as Lightroom, perhaps marginally quicker, but I think that’s gated by a number of factors outside of software like card reader, card, USB, and so on.

This is arguably the most fundamental and important difference between Lightroom and ACDSee Ultimate : you don’t have to import files.
