Each new major version of vSphere ESXi brings a new virtual machine compatibility level. This VM compatibility determines what the available virtual hardware will be in regard to the physical hardware of the host. What we call the hardware version. As mentioned earlier it is always recommended to upgrade the virtual hardware of a virtual machine but not required. Upgrading the VM compatibility is like changing the hardware of the server. However, if you want to use any of the new features mentioned above like persistent memory or Microsoft VBS you will have no choice but to upgrade.
